One Person Charged Following Flight From Police
File # 25-6918 (SP)
One man has been arrested and charged with several criminal offences over the weekend after he attempted to flee from police and was later caught and found to be in possession of allegedly stolen property.
Shortly after 5:30 am on January 24, 2025, Surrey Police Service Frontline officers responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle parked in a parking lot in the area of 139 Street and 101 Avenue, Surrey. SPS officers arrived and as they were approaching the vehicle, the driver then allegedly tried to flee by ramming their way around the police car.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle using their emergency equipment, but the driver did not comply. Other police vehicles arrived, and the driver of the vehicle then tried to flee the scene. Officers were able to position their police cars to prevent the driver’s escape and both he and a passenger were taken into custody without further incident.
The passenger was released at the scene with no charges, but the driver was arrested and has been charged with multiple Criminal Code offences.
Steven Thomas Paton, a 29-year-old man, has been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, one count of flight from a peace officer, one count of failing to comply with a court order, and possession of stolen property over $5,000, as the vehicle is believed to be stolen.
Paton was remanded in custody and was scheduled to appear in Surrey Provincial Court on the morning of January 28, 2025.
