SPS News Release

Surrey Police Service (SPS) is continuing its efforts to encourage more women to consider a career in policing with a number of women-focused initiatives this spring, including Recruit Information Sessions and an Introduction to Policing Workshop for Women.

As SPS continues its hiring of approximately 300 police officers, which will include a combination of recruits and experienced officers, encouraging women to join this traditionally male-dominated profession is one of SPS’s hiring priorities. Currently, one in five SPS police officers is female.

“Policing is a rewarding, multi-faceted career, you can work in a number of diverse areas from operational policing and investigative services to training, recruiting and community engagement,” says Sergeant Cindy Vance with the SPS Recruiting Section. “I’ve been in policing for 30 years, and I’ve had the opportunity to coach and mentor future generations of police officers. I work at ensuring that women are represented in policing and feel safe, valued, and welcomed at Surrey Police Service.”

SPS is holding several upcoming Recruit Information Sessions including sessions on April 5 and April 9, with the April 9 event specifically for women considering a policing career with SPS. Attendees will learn about the application process and have the opportunity to speak to SPS officers about their experience in policing.

On May 10, SPS will host an Introduction to Policing Workshop for Women, where potential recruit candidates will hear about the many career opportunities in policing. For those interested in attending the May 10th workshop, a short application process and attendance at a Recruit Information Session must be completed prior to attending.

You can learn more about how SPS is actively encouraging women to start and grow their career in policing at www.surreypolice.ca/careers/women-policing. Additionally, SPS has joined the 30x30 Initiative and taken the pledge to have 30% female recruits by 2030 through a number of measures, including increasing representation of women at all ranks.

Registration for the Recruit Information Sessions is required as space is limited. Details can be found on the SPS website or by contacting 604-591-4084 or careers@surreypolice.ca.
