Surrey Police Service (SPS) recruits attend training at the Justice Institute of BC (JIBC) Police Academy located in New Westminster, BC, and training at SPS.

SPS Introductory Training

SPS provides all recruits with two weeks of introductory training that includes employee wellness, professional standards, diversity and inclusion training, legal and policy reviews, and leadership training.

JIBC Police Academy

Recruits attend the JIBC Police Academy in New Westminster for two blocks of training, totalling 23 weeks, plus 22 weeks of field training at SPS. Recruits attend the Academy during the week, Monday to Friday, for eight hours per day. Please note that there are no living accommodations at the JIBC. Recruit Constables receive a base salary and benefits while undergoing their training at the JIBC. SPS will cover the majority of the tuition costs, with recruits responsible for a portion of their program tuition.

Block 1: Block I is 14 weeks of training at the JIBC Police Academy where the recruits build the foundations for basic skills needed for a new frontline member. Each week of training in Block I is based on one type of call where recruits learn the legal, operational, and tactical skills required to effectively respond to that call.

Block 2: SPS Field Training Program Following the completion of Block 1 of training at the JIBC, recruits return to SPS for operational skills training and 22 weeks of on the job training with SPS Field Training Officers.

Block 3: Recruits attend to the JIBC for nine further weeks of Advanced Recruit Training. Knowledge gained during Blocks 1 and 2 is built upon to allow the recruit to work independently following graduation from the program. Following the successful completion of Block 3, the new recruit will graduate as a "Qualified Municipal Constable".

Certified Municipal Constable

Block 4: Following graduation from the JIBC, the Qualified Municipal Constable is placed into a Frontline Policing team where they are assessed for one year, prior to being designated as a Certified Municipal Constable.

Culture of Continuous Learning

SPS encourages ongoing professional development, including regular training at our in-house training centre. Additional courses and training with the JIBC, partner agencies, and post secondary institutions will also be made available to SPS members throughout their careers.
